You use the shower daily and the tub almost never, so a tub to shower conversion turns the biggest fixture in your bathroom into something you use. GVD Renovations & Remodeling installs acrylic conversions in as little as one day and tiled showers in days to weeks, depending on scope. Current special: $1,500 off your entire walk-in shower or tub job.

Many Sacramento homes from the 1950s through the 1970s have a 60-inch tub alcove in a 5x8 bathroom. We replace that tub with a shower of the same footprint, so the plumbing wall stays in place and the job stays small.
Our acrylic systems form a single-piece base, wall and surround, so water has no grout lines or seams to work into. We also treat the surfaces with a proprietary finish that inhibits mold, mildew and bacteria. Most existing tubs can be converted, though out-of-square walls or a drain that needs replacing add scope. Our showers carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty.
The conversions we install in Sacramento, backed by the Limited Lifetime Warranty, give you these gains over the tub you replace:
Floor space: a shower can use the same 60-inch alcove with a clearer footprint, and sliding doors remove the swing of a hinged door.
Easier entry: a low-threshold or curbless entry removes the 14 to 20 inch tub wall you step over.
Seating: a built-in bench or compact corner seat lets you sit while you wash.
Maintenance: full-wall panels have no grout to scrub or reseal.
Safety: slip-resistant flooring and grab bars reduce fall risk, which is highest when stepping over a wet tub edge.
Expect $5,000 to $25,000+ for tub-to-shower conversions, with a $9,500 to $14,000 average for a standard tiled conversion with frameless glass, depending on shower size, materials and features like built-in benches or custom tile. A full bathroom remodel can easily exceed $15,000. If you are asking whether $10,000 is enough, it falls inside the conversion range, though it will not cover a layout change.
We give a free, detailed fixed-price proposal: the full scope and a firm total price in writing. The number you approve is the number you pay, with no surprise charges once the crew is on site.
| Cost driver | Lower-cost choice | Higher-cost choice |
|---|---|---|
| Shower base and walls | Acrylic one-piece system | Custom tile over a built pan |
| Glass | Curtain or standard sliding door | Frameless custom glass |
| Plumbing | Existing valve reused, drain upsized in place | New valve, 2-inch drain, rerouted lines |
| Features | Standard fixtures | Bench, niche, multiple showerheads |
| Entry | Low threshold | Curbless with recessed floor |
Plumbing changes and curbless entries cost the most because they involve opening the floor, so settle those two decisions first. Material choice comes next: marble and custom glass raise the price, while acrylic keeps it down.
A prefab kit is the cheaper route when your project is simple, because a kit is built from acrylic-style panels in fixed sizes. Home Depot sells prefab tub-to-shower kits and shower surrounds. Kohler also offers dealer-installed tub-to-shower conversions through Reveal by KOHLER. A kit is a fair choice when your tub is a standard size and you are comfortable with plumbing work.
The limit of a kit is fit and waterproofing. Walls that are out of square, a drain that needs replacing, or a valve that needs relocating all turn a kit into a custom job. Our local team answers to one project manager.
Leaks come from the pan and the drain, not the tile, so these steps decide whether the shower lasts.
We remove the tub and inspect the subfloor and framing for rot.
We replace the tub drain with a 2-inch shower drain and trap, which the California Plumbing Code requires for showers.
We build or set a pan sloped about 1/4 inch per foot toward the drain.
We waterproof the pan and walls with a sheet or liquid membrane (Schluter Kerdi is one common system).
We flood-test the pan before any tile or panel goes on.
We install a pressure-balance or thermostatic valve so a flushed toilet does not scald you.
An acrylic base arrives pre-formed, so steps 3 and 4 are shortened. A tile shower needs the full sequence, which is why it takes longer but can be shaped to any size.
A rainfall showerhead, a tiled niche and dimmable waterproof lighting are the upgrades that change how the room feels. A steam generator needs a sealed enclosure and a vapor-tight ceiling, so decide on it before demolition. A handheld sprayer on a slide bar suits every user, from kids to seniors, and adds little cost.

Acrylic is the quicker option and tile is the more customizable one, which shapes everything below.
| Option | Install time | Upkeep | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acrylic one-piece system | As little as 1 day | Wipe clean, no grout | Fast, budget-conscious swaps |
| Full-wall panels | A few days | No grout lines | Easy cleaning for life |
| Custom tile over built pan | Days to weeks, by scope | Periodic grout sealing | Custom size, curbless, design focus |
Pick acrylic if speed and low upkeep matter most. Pick tile if you want a custom size, a curbless entry or a design statement.
The next decision is whether a tub to shower conversion or a full bathroom remodel fits your goal. If your main goal is a shower, a conversion costs a fraction of a remodel and takes days rather than weeks. A master bath remodel takes 5 to 8 weeks of active construction in Sacramento, and special-order vanities or tile can extend it. Choose a remodel when you want to move fixtures or change the layout.
Keep one bathtub in a one-bathroom home, because buyers with young children often look for one. If you have a second bathroom with a tub, converting the other usually costs you nothing at resale. The 2025 Cost vs. Value Report puts bath remodel recoup nationally at between 42% and 80%, and the return comes from a clean, current, well-built room rather than extravagant fixtures.
A private home is not bound by the ADA, but its dimensions are the best benchmark for a senior-friendly shower. A roll-in shower is at least 30 by 60 inches, and a transfer shower is 36 by 36 inches. Grab bars mount 33 to 36 inches above the floor, and a fold-down seat sits 17 to 19 inches high.
A curbless entry needs the subfloor recessed, which is the main added cost. We install blocking in the walls so grab bars hold body weight wherever you place them.
Whether a permit is required depends on the scope. Like-for-like fixture swaps are often exempt, while moving a drain, adding a valve or altering framing generally triggers one through the City of Sacramento Building Division or your county. When a permit is required, GVD handles the permitting process.
California requires a licensed contractor for any job of $1,000 or more in labor and materials, and for any job that needs a building permit, whatever its size. A general contractor qualifies with at least four years of journey-level experience and by passing the state's law and trade exams, and plumbing work falls under the C-36 classification. Check any contractor at the CSLB license lookup. Ours is license #989637, with workers' compensation and general liability coverage.
On timing, an acrylic installation can take as little as 1 day. A tiled shower takes longer, because the pan, membrane and grout each need cure time, and permit review adds time when a permit is required. Your project manager sets the schedule with your proposal.
Some homeowners ask about doing it themselves. California lets owner-builders do their own electrical and plumbing work on a home they live in, with a permit and inspection. A failed waterproofing job can rot a subfloor, which is why most owners hire out the pan and drain.
Original Medicare does not pay for a tub to shower conversion, because home modifications are not classed as durable medical equipment. Possible help comes from other sources:
Medi-Cal waiver programs for qualifying low-income residents.
VA Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) grants for eligible veterans.
Medicare Advantage plans, a few of which include limited home-safety benefits.
We offer senior and military discounts, plus financing through third-party lenders. Approval, rates and terms depend on your credit profile, and checking eligibility does not affect your credit score.
An acrylic conversion can finish in as little as one day. Bathroom size, design complexity and added features extend that.
We use protective coverings and clean up after the job.
Yes. Choose from acrylic, custom glass and tile, in a range of colors and fixtures.
Often yes, especially when replacing an outdated tub. Keep one bathtub in a one-bathroom home.
Yes. Removing the tub opens the room, and sliding doors and compact benches save space.
Usually the drain is upsized to 2 inches at its current location; outdated plumbing is handled within the conversion.
We install low-threshold entries, slip-resistant flooring, grab bars and built-in seating.
A handyman can't legally take a job of $1,000 or more, or any job that needs a permit, and a leaking pan may fall outside a warranty.
