A Sacramento replacement has to hold up against local conditions: triple-digit summer heat, strong UV, and daily temperature swings. Heat, UV, and temperature swings dry wood out and fade finishes faster than coastal weather does, so species choice and finish schedule matter more here than the siding profile you pick.
The species to consider are western red cedar and redwood, and cedar shakes remain the signature look. We install each species and each profile, and we recommend one after inspecting your walls.
The choice comes down to two decisions: cedar or redwood for the wood, and a profile that matches your home's style. Cedar and redwood resist decay and insects naturally, which is why they lead the field for exterior cladding. Redwood is typically the pricier of the two, and its tannins resist rot well. Cedar is lighter and takes stain evenly.
In hot, dry climates like Sacramento's, both species hold up when sealed against UV. Thermally modified wood is a further option for storefronts and sun-baked walls because heat treatment reduces its moisture uptake.
| Profile | Look | Board direction | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lap (bevel) | Clean horizontal lines | Horizontal | Traditional and modern homes |
| Board and batten | Tall vertical strips | Vertical | Modern farmhouse, retail fronts |
| Shingle or shake | Textured, handcrafted | Overlapping courses | Craftsman and cottage homes |
Pick the profile for the architecture of your house, and pick the species for the climate. Species and how well you keep the finish up decide how long the wall lasts, while the profile mainly decides how it looks.
The remaining question is whether wood is the right material at all. Wood takes paint and stain readily. One species can therefore give a warm rustic look in honey tones or a contemporary one in pale, cool finishes. Older homes often depend on authentic wood, because their original construction was designed for it. Substituting another material can change how the walls handle moisture.
The tradeoff is upkeep. Wood needs regular refinishing, and it can attract pests when it is left unsealed, though cedar's natural oils deter termites.
A damaged board can be cut out and replaced without tearing off the whole wall. We match the species, profile, and finish so the repair blends into the existing siding. Fiber cement and vinyl are harder to patch invisibly once a section is damaged.
Cedar can last 20 to 40 years when it is sealed and refinished on schedule. Its downsides are real: it fades to silver-gray if left unfinished, it dents more easily than fiber cement, and it burns, which matters in wildfire areas.
Wall area differs from floor area, so for a 2,000 sq ft house we measure the walls on site and price the job from that measurement.
Wood siding runs about $8 to $13 per square foot installed (as of October 2026), more than vinyl to install and maintain. The 2025 Cost vs. Value Report shows fiber cement siding replacement recouping about 114% of cost at resale (about $24,420 in added value), while vinyl recoups about 97%.
James Hardie fiber cement carries a Class A fire rating on its own, which is why it is the most common Class A siding we install. It is also significantly less susceptible to moisture-related swelling and decay than wood-based siding products. We install it as a James Hardie Elite Contractor, and in 2025 we won the James Hardie Service Excellence Award, the only siding company in California to receive the honor.
Vinyl does not provide the same fire resistance as fiber cement, which carries a Class A rating. LP SmartSide engineered wood is combustible on its own, but it is CAL FIRE-listed for California WUI zones when it is installed as part of a qualifying fire-rated wall assembly, which we build where code calls for it. We hold LP Master Level Preferred Contractor status.
California Building Code Chapter 7A sets exterior wall requirements in wildfire-prone areas, and untreated cedar and redwood are combustible. Foothill and Tahoe properties often fall in these zones. In those areas we steer you toward a compliant wall assembly or a listed product.
We start with the free inspection, then decide whether overlay or full tear-off suits your walls. Overlay works when the existing wall is sound, flat, and dry, and code and manufacturer specs allow it. Tear-off is typically recommended for rot or an uneven surface.
Inspect the walls and confirm scope
Remove old siding if recommended
Repair sheathing and install a moisture barrier
Fasten the boards and flash the openings
Install trim, caulk, and apply the finish
Clean the site and complete the walkthrough
Most homes take one to two weeks, depending on wall area and finish work. Commercial schedules depend on wall area and whether your business stays open, which we plan with you before work begins.
Once your new siding is on the wall, the finish you choose sets how often it needs attention. Solid-color paint lasts longest on sun-exposed walls, while semi-transparent stain shows the grain but needs refreshing sooner.
| Task | Frequency | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Wash with mild cleaner | Every year | Removes dust, mildew, pollen |
| Inspect boards and caulk | Every year | Catches cracks and warping early |
| Re-stain or repaint | Every 3 to 5 years | Restores UV and moisture protection |
In Sacramento sun, south and west walls usually fade first, so we prioritize them.
If you want the look of wood with less upkeep, we install engineered wood from LP, along with fiber cement and James Hardie products. Engineered wood suits homeowners who like the grain but would rather skip regular restaining.
We install cedar, redwood, and engineered wood in lap, board and batten, and shingle profiles. We recommend a species after inspecting your walls and discussing your budget.
Dry summers and mild winters lower the risk of rot, provided you seal the wood. UV and thermal cycling are the main threats, so finish quality matters a great deal.
Wash it yearly and re-stain or repaint every 3 to 5 years. Yearly inspections for cracks and warping prevent small repairs from becoming board replacements.
Wood insulates modestly on its own. Adding insulation or a continuous barrier during installation improves your home's energy performance more than the boards do.

It offers a natural grain that synthetic products imitate, but it demands more upkeep than vinyl or fiber cement. The comparison above covers cost and fire resistance.
