We stripped this Sacramento home down to the studs on the outside, hauling off the old siding and skip sheathing layer by layer before rebuilding the wall system from the structure out. We installed James Hardie ColorPlus lap siding from the Statement Collection across the entire property, finished in Boothbay Blue, with Arctic White HardieTrim 5/4x4 boards wrapping the window and door openings and corners. Behind the siding, our crew sheathed the walls in new 7/16-inch exterior-grade OSB for shear strength and passed the city nailing inspection before any siding went up. We added HardieWrap weather barrier across the walls, Forti-Flash rubberized flashing at the windows and doors, and metal z-flashing to keep moisture out for the long haul, with R-13 Owens Corning fiberglass insulation packed between the studs in the resided areas.
During tear-off we inspected the wall framing and addressed dry rot found inside the cavities, repairing and replacing the affected members before closing things back up. At the homeowner's request, we removed the exterior light box at the rear gable and closed off the old gable vent openings with new siding for a continuous, finished look. We also painted the eaves, fascia, foundation, garage door, porch ceiling, and the front security screen door to tie the whole exterior together.
