James Hardie Artisan Lap Siding in South San Francisco, CA 94080
On a hillside street in South San Francisco, this home traded its tired V-groove siding for the clean shadow lines of James Hardie Artisan lap. The lower walls now read as crisp, deliberate horizontal courses, while the existing cedar shingles up top were left in place and refreshed to tie the two textures together. Our crew handled the high walls and hard-to-reach gable areas, which gave the finished exterior a sharper, more architectural look than the original siding ever had.
Rather than haul off the old V-groove entirely, we repurposed it as sheathing behind the new Artisan boards, then wrapped the walls in HardieWrap weather barrier for moisture protection. Window and door openings were sealed with Forti-Flash rubberized flashing and tied into a metal Z-flashing system before the new 5/4x4 ColorPlus trim went on around openings and corners, with 5/4x6 trim framing the garage door. During tear-off we inspected the wall framing and repaired dry rot where we found it, since there's no telling what's inside a wall until the old siding comes down. New cement fascia and trim boards were installed on the gable ends under the roof flashing, and the decorative boards beneath the gutters were carefully removed and reset.
Once the siding was in, we painted the Artisan field, foundation, gutters, downspouts, flashings, and decorative boards to coordinate with the pre-finished trim and the existing shingles. Vents in the shingle areas were swapped out and the fascia above the shingles replaced, then we reinstalled the downspouts and house numbers and cleared the site.
